Transsaccadic integration and perceptual continuity.

Our perception of the visual world seems continuous despite the fact that visual information is sampled in discrete fixations interrupted by saccadic eye movements. Two new behavioral studies show that perceptual continuity may be partly achieved by combining feature information of saccade target objects across saccades in a close-to-statistically optimal fashion.

Numerosity estimation benefits from transsaccadic information integration

Humans achieve a stable and homogeneous representation of their visual environment, although visual processing varies across the visual field. Here we investigated the circumstances under which peripheral and foveal information is integrated for numerosity estimation across saccades. We asked our participants to judge the number of black and white dots on a screen. Information was presented eit...

Transsaccadic memory of position and form.

Why and how people perceive the visual world as continuous and stable, despite the gross changes of its retinal projection that occur with each saccade, is one of the classic problems in perception. In the present paper, we argue that an important factor of visual stability and transsaccadic perception is formed by the reafferent visual information, i.e., the visual display that is present when...

Transsaccadic memory for visual object detail.

When we move our eyes around in real-world scenes, we typically have several peripheral previews of an object before we direct our eyes straight at the object. Numerous studies on transsaccadic memory have investigated whether there is any evidence for the integration of peripheral object information acquired presaccadically with foveal object information acquired postsaccadically. We review th...

The Influence of Enantiomorphic Transformation on Transsaccadic Object Integration

Two experiments investigated whether the left-right orientation of an object is retained and integrated across a saccade during object identification. In Experiment 1, participants moved their eyes to the target object and named it as quickly as possible. In Experiment 2, participants looked through an array of 4 target objects in preparation for an immediate recognition test. In both experimen...
